From the night of August to November, in the provinces of Lai Châu and Điện Biên, there are often heavy rains caused landslides in many areas, affecting traffic and safety of people.
One man lost his life late on 17 August 2021 in a landslide caused by big rains in Tam Đường district, a northern mountainous district of Lai Châu.
Vice-Chairman of the Tam Đường People’s Committee Trần Văn Sung said the mountain landslide, following heavy rains for the last two days, in Hồ Thấu village pushed away a wooden house, killing a 44-year-old man of the Dao ethnic minority sleeping there.
In Điện Biên province, a heavy rain poured down on the night of 31 October 2021, which caused landslides in Pa Tần village. A large amount of soil collapsed and damaged wooden houses in the area. Fortunately, the tribesmen could get out before that, so no one was hurt. However, a young female teacher from a nearby house was slightly injured during that night.
In addition to housing damage, this heavy rain also blocked the road connecting National Highway 4H to Huổi Sậu village, causing about 200 households of Dao and Mông ethnic minorities to be isolated temporarily. Some rivers and streams in the area were rising, causing a potential risk of flash floods and landslides in some other places.
